If you’ve just wrapped up your information technology technician course and have received your diploma in information technology, then likely you’re exploring your options. They are vast and varied. From help desk to cybersecurity, there isn’t a company out there (okay, nearly all) that doesn’t require your expertise as a graduate from an information technology technician course.

Top 7 Areas of IT Specialization and the Job Opportunities Within Them

 

1. IT Support

An area of IT that’s terrific to learn within and launch a career from, these positions focus on assisting end-users with technical issues day-to-day, allow for building connections within the company and determining which particular, next-level, area you may want to leap to.

  • Help Desk – In this role you’ll take customer queries, troubleshoot issues, and provide support in person or remotely and if you can’t solve the problem, you’ll direct them to who can. In addition to updating and maintaining systems, you will also maintain documentation and uphold network securities protocols.
  • Computer Support – In this, you’re on the frontlines, dealing with a wide variety of issues, from Wi-Fi connections, workstation configurations, setting up or repairing equipment and devices, and troubleshooting problems to rolling out new software and hardware.

2. Data Management

This area focuses on the design of structured database systems, data analysis and creating contingency plans in the even of data loss.

  • Database Administrator – Your role is to help store, organize and secure the data of an organization and in the event of a data-loss, you’ll also be responsible for data backups and for taking the lead in the recovery efforts.
  • Data Analyst – In this role, you will organize data in relation to market research, logistics, linguistics, sales numbers, and other behaviours, ensure data is accurate and of quality and then analyzed, designed and presented to key decision makers.

3. Software Development

This area of IT hones in on building and modifying software applications to support users’ needs.

  • Software Developer – You will create computer programs that will address a variety of needs and accomplish myriad tasks. Examples of useful software programs are task monitoring, portfolio website, sentiment analysis programs and privacy protection systems. Your developments can be applied to various industries from finance and tech to video gaming, opening doors to a number of career opportunities.

4. Web Development

This area covers a broad range of tasks related to ensuring a strong web connection, from coding and design to performance.

  • Web Developer – In this position you’ll be responsible for creating and maintaining websites. You may work behind the scenes seeing to the mechanics of a website, or work alongside colleagues supporting their web needs, or both.

5. IT Infrastructure

This area refers to the planning, design, and implementation of IT hardware, usually rolling out on a company-wide basis.

  • Computer Network Architect (or Engineers) – Responsible for designing and building networks, including local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs) and Intranets. In addition, you’ll support issues that may arise with the system and anticipate and plan for long-term networking needs.
  • IT Project Manager – In this role you will plan and implement complex IT initiatives and communicate with stakeholders and teams to ensure buy-in, by presenting a comprehensive vision and outlining project goals. You will also be responsible for holding teams accountable to meeting deadlines on budget.

6. Cloud Computing

With the booming need in this area, opportunities are ‘the sky’s the limit’. This area includes programming for the cloud using software platforms such as Google Cloud, Azure, AWS.

  • Cloud Architect – In this role you oversee the management and maintenance of a company’s cloud computing system, from developing strategies and evaluating applications and hardware, to organizing the systems to meet operational goals.
  • Cloud Consultant – You work with companies to help them understand the available cloud computing services, empower decision making that supports their operational goals and familiarize them with the technical aspects of cloud-based applications.

7. Cyber Security

Another booming area of opportunity, this specialization focuses on keeping an organization’s data secure and ensuring preventative measures are implemented to ward off a breach.

  • Cyber Security Analyst – In this position you are in charge of reviewing computer networks and identifying potential areas of risk, installing the software that will protect the system from unauthorized access and recording detections to mitigate future breaches.
  • Information Security Analyst – In this position, you’re responsible for monitoring networks for security breaches and investigating when the need arises. You maintain protection software and encryption programs, check for vulnerabilities in network systems and computers and document findings, incorporating these into future development plans.
