Service Worker

Working in this field really isn’t just a profession, it’s a calling. If you’re considering a care support worker program/service worker program, you are undoubtedly passionate about people and are looking for an opportunity to make a powerful difference in the lives of others.

Beyond the intrinsic benefits of offering hope, providing guidance and compassionate care for those in need, there are some clear and tangible reasons why you would choose a support worker program and this career.

First let’s review a few options for this career path. At Anderson College we offer two programs in this service worker field.

Developmental Service Worker – a 49-week program geared to empowering students to work with and support those with developmental and physical disabilities, and those who deal with mental illness, to help promote their health and wellbeing.

Child and Youth Care with Addictions Support Worker – a 72-week program designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to work closely with children, adolescents and their families as they face social, emotional, behavioural, and mental health concerns and provide support for their needs.

Regardless of where you put your passions and talents to work, the overall rewards are the same in this profession, and here’s what they are.

Top 6 Benefits of Becoming a Service Worker

1. A Growing Field

Particularly in the wake of COVID-19, the needs of those who are vulnerable are real and extensive. With great need, comes opportunity for those with the heart for this kind of work to embrace an evolving, expanding and in-demand career.

2. Work and Opportunity Variety

So many individuals and organizations require support, and this means variety in job positions, with public and private companies and people, and allows you the chance to find an environment that suits you. Whether working with clients/families in-home, or in a clinic or hospital setting, you can set the stage for what works best for your goals and needs.

3. Powerful Impact

Quite literally, the work you do in this field changes lives, it improves quality of life for those in need, offers hope and inspires desire and action to evolve in health and wellbeing. If you’ve always wanted to make a difference, this is the career for you.

4. Job Satisfaction

Perhaps not surprisingly, when you know you’re motivating others and encouraging life change, and experiencing the expression of gratitude that often comes along with it, you feel a terrific sense of satisfaction. After the last few years we’ve experienced, we are acutely aware of the importance of enjoying life and appreciating the moments. Learning and connecting with expert instructors in a youth service worker course or a home support worker program, we quickly come to realize that we’re a part of a community of those who long to embrace careers they enjoy – and that makes for a rewarding job choice.

5. Flexible Schedules

We also realize more and more that balance in work and life, caring for others and caring for self, are essential. With a career in service work, you are not only able to select from a variety of environments, but can choose a flexible schedule to ensure you are balancing your career with your personal responsibilities and personal life goals.

6. Perpetual Self Improvement

As we can only truly offer to others what we ourselves first possess, in order to inspire and set an authentic example for others, we must be walking our talk. This means that if you are committed to the health and growth of those you serve, you too will grow in self-care, balance and wellbeing. This is a career that is gift for others and to yourself and those you deeply love.
