Medical Laboratory Training

Training for lab technicians empowers aspiring medical lab technicians with the essential skills and knowledge required to perform routine laboratory tests, working under the guidance of a medical technologist.

This field ignites interest in those looking for challenging healthcare training programs, those that lead to rewarding, fulfilling careers. As a graduate of a medical laboratory technician course your role will focus mainly on the pre-analysis process, preparing and analyzing samples. This work makes a fundamental difference to patient care, aiding medical professionals as they diagnosis and treat illness and disease.

At Anderson College, we offer theoretical and practical training, led by industry experts and hands-on experience in our state-of-the-art labs. We thought an overview of the kinds of lab tests you’ll learn, and will be expected to perform in your career, may help you make an informed decision as you look to your healthcare-career future.

5 Common Tests You’ll Execute as a Medical Lab Tech

1. Urinalysis

Commonly used for patients being admitted to a hospital, identified as needing surgery, or even simply needing a routine health examination, and particularly for those determining if they’re pregnant, a urinalysis is often where the testing begins. In this test, a patient’s urine is examined under a microscope, allowing a doctor to analyze the pH levels, amount of protein and sugar present, the number of red and white blood cells and whether bacteria are also present.

2. Basic Metabolic Panel

A thorough dive into a patient’s health picture, this test measures glucose, calcium, potassium, sodium and creatinine, chloride, and blood urea nitrogen levels. This typical test offers the health professional a glimpse into a patient’s kidney function, electrolyte and fluid balance and blood sugar levels. The results of this metabolic panel test, allows the doctor to effectively plan a course of action for, and perhaps medications to support, better health.

3. Blood Cholesterol

Cholesterol is the waxy, fat-like substance that helps the body create cell membranes, vitamin D and a host of hormones. In excess, it can clog arteries, leading to major health issues. This standard test helps doctors understand the risk patients are at for health conditions initiated by narrow or blocked arteries, such as heart disease and stroke.

4. Complete Blood Count (CBC)

A versatile test, this CBC measures blood chemistry, and markers of inflammation by reviewing red and white blood cell and platelet counts. It is used to screen for disorders and helps physicians evaluate and understand the cause of bruising, weakness, and fatigue. It may even diagnose severe illnesses such as anemia, malaria, and leukemia.

5. Blood Glucose

Measuring the amount of a type of sugar, called glucose, in your blood, this test can detect and monitor diabetes. While glucose comes from carbohydrate foods and is the main source of energy used by the body, glucose levels that remain high over time can damage your eyes, nerves, kidneys, and blood vessels. This analysis allows a doctor to recognize if there is an issue and create a treatment plan for a patient who’s at risk.

These are just some of the fascinating tests that you will perform once you’ve obtained your certification. If you’re looking into medical laboratory technologist programs to expand your healthcare career, do we have some leading-edge options for you!
