“Our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers.”
— M. Scott Peck

Most of us are geared to do what is necessary for our survival, to do what is ‘right’ for our families, to be financially responsible to build a life that is safe and of ease for ourselves and those we love. These callings are good and noble and serve us well, for the most part. This path does allow us to survive, but we must ask ourselves if we wish to shift from surviving to thriving. Within these righteous confines, we can forget what we truly love, we can lose the passion, the sense of purpose, the drive to live not just our ‘good’ life, but our grand and glorious life!

If you’re feeling the itch, the inklings, the inspiration to shift your career and take your life to new levels, you’ve likely ridden the high of being on the cusp of change. And then, perhaps you’ve felt reality kick in and then there before you are the mounting obstacles that threaten to crush your soaring dream before you’ve even gotten it off the ground. Oh, that voice of the critic inside our head can be a fickle and fearful one, can’t it?

Let’s look those looming obstacles right in the eye and tackle them one by one, shall we? Because even an elephant can be eaten one bite at a time (as they say).

5 Typical Obstacles – Presented by the Skeptic Inside Our Heads When We Attempt to Change

1.“I’m too old.”

“Phooey,” we say. We can offer you example after example of Anderson College students who have shared their stories with us and said straight out that you’re never too old to begin a career and a life you love. You may ‘feel’ old in the job you’re in if you’re not passionate about it. But guaranteed when you begin doing something you love, you will discover energy you never knew you had.

2.“I don’t have the right skills.”

Okay, maybe. Then get them. As a human species we’re living longer and longer, which means that we’ll switch up careers to keep life rich and meaningful. And if you find that you’re driven toward a certain career path, you have got to know in this day and age that there are educational programs, Toronto colleges, courses and flexible second-career options to get you there.

3.“I won’t know anyone in a new field or industry.”

You’re right. So, with a desire to begin a new career, comes the youthful need to make new friends, build new contacts, shake hands (touch elbows), and connect with those with similar interests. You may find you need this in your life, both personally and professionally. So, you just need to leap in and begin. If your daughter or granddaughter can do it, so can you!!

4.“It will take time to find a new job.”

It may; it may not. You have a few options here. You can remain in the job you have while you take college courses in Toronto or attend private colleges in Ontario or, if you leap right into a second careers program, maybe it comes with a practicum that turns into a job.

5.“I can’t take the financial risk.”

There are always risks involved when doing something new and adventurous, but there again, are options. You can embrace a busier schedule and work while attending school to upgrade your skills and build experience, or you can tap opportunities for college funding. Where there is a will, there is a college-in-Toronto way!

So Now to Overcome the Obstacles by Taking Targeted Action

There is no time like the present to shut down the critic in your mind and no better way than to counter that skeptic with the voice of reason and possibility. Here’s how:

  • Call out those fears and face them by writing them all down. Review them one by one and brainstorm ideas for how to overcome them, beginning with the question, “What if there was a solution for this challenge?” And then write down what comes to you.
  • Write out your “Why?” Why do you want to start a new career, embrace a new opportunity in life? What will happen if you take a chance? What will happen if you remain right where you are?
  • Set out your goals, one-by-one, step-by-step. You will begin to see patterns emerging and the next right action will reveal itself as you create momentum forward. (We promise).
  • Create an action plan with details and dates and then do your best to stick to it. Every time you accomplish something, treat yourself – to a coffee, a chocolate, an evening with a friend, a bath or other rewarding activity. Make an event of your efforts!
  • Leverage support from friends and family. Tell them your goals and hopes. Ask for their help and be specific. Do you need childcare, help with making meals or cleaning the house while you go to school to upgrade your skills?
  • Research and reach out to colleges that speak to you and ask for, and expect, support as you navigate the application process, and the steps necessary to apply for financial assistance. You will soon realize, and feel like, the whole world is conspiring for your success!
